This was stated directly by a senior official of the Afghan Interior Ministry; who was quoted by Reuters on Sunday (15/8/2021). The official said the Taliban came from all sides of the region. However; it did not provide further details.
A tweet from an Afghan Presidential palace account said gunfire had been heard at a number of points around Kabul.
US officials said the diplomats were being transported to the airport from the embassy in the fortified Wazir Akbar Khan district. Many US troops were sent to help with the evacuation after a Taliban blitz of attacks brought the Islamists to Kabul within days.
Last week; US intelligence estimates said Kabul could hold out for at least three months.
A Taliban official told Reuters the group did not want any casualties when it took over; but had not announced a ceasefire.
Previously; Taliban insurgents also managed to seize us east of Jalalabad without a fight; giving them control of one of the main highways into landlocked Afghanistan.
The Taliban also took over a border post close to Pakistan; Torkham. Then leaving Kabul airport the only way out of Afghanistan is still in government hands.
